What is “The Core”

Everyone has heard of “the core”. But what exactly does that mean? Pisanitraining’s Kritopher Shumway wrote in and gave his definition of “the core”. Enjoy this scientific description that really breaks down each element and its purpose. ENJOY!
The core consists of both intra-abdominal and external abdominal muscles. The intra-abdominals are responsible for stabilizing the lumbo-pelvic hip complex along with the spine. Without a strong intra-abdominal base, you will not be able to stay balanced throughout your entire swing due to the excess force your rectus abdominus, transverse, and obliques can produce if you solely train them. I recommend a variety of exercises which will target both areas of the abdominals.
Some favorites are the prone iso-abs, side iso-abs with rotation, depth push-up with rotation, forehand and backhand medicine ball tosses from the knees, along with lunges in multiple directions with a weighted bar to isolate your abdominals. There are many more, just remember having a balanced core will reduce injury and help produce the most power behind your ground strokes.
