Learning From Pre - A Running Legend

pre“Pre ran every race as though it was it’s last.” Bill Bowerman said at Steve Prefontaine’s funeral. “This is the Bell Lap for Steve Prefontaine.” The clock above the track was set at Pre’s NCAA 10,000 meter record time of 13 mins. and 56 sec, and he was paraded around for one more run around the University of Oregon’s track.

What I liked about Pre was his, “Never say die” attitude. Every race he entered, he went out there to win it, to give it 100 percent in every department; both physically and mentally. He laid it on the line, pushing himselfs to the absolute limit, and one time, even winning the NCAA championships with stitches in one foot and holding every record from the 2,000 meters to the 10,000 meters.

What you can learn from Pre is this: Make your training sessions, and your competitions, like they are the last one’s you are ever going to participate in. Go into thinking, “Ok, this may be the last time that I am ever going to do this, so let’s make it great, and let’s make it the best I can do, today!”
