Field Workout - 20 yard Sprints - with Resistance
Posted October 23, 2009 – 1:43 pm in: Amelia Island Personal TrainingI have never been a fan of squats. Whenever I did them I felt that there was significant risk of injury to the lower back and that the muscles being used were primarily the mid to lower back muscles. Athletes need to run, not jump from spot to spot. This requires one leg working at a time, and this is why you have seen many single leg exercises on the site.
When you want to build up very functional leg strength, try running with added resistance in the form of weight. Here I hooked up an old parachute running belt onto a chain that I purchased from Home Depot. We attached the 45 pound plate to the chain with a rubber bungy cord.
As you will see in this video, Macy gets his heart rate up near maximum and feels the need to accelerate forward by really pushing off the ground.
In this video I truly believe that there was an error with the heart rate monitor. I don’t think it was adjusted correctly and that is why you see Macy have a reading of 152, about 30 seconds after he reported 152. Near the end his heart rate reads 189.
As with all exercises, please see a professional fitness expert or doctor before performing this. This will put stress on your lower back so don’t over do this drill.
