Inside the US Open Gym

Posted August 26, 2010 – 7:20 am in: Pegasus Internet Training Program, Tennis, Tennis Fitness

For the last few days we have experienced an abundance of rain showers to put it mildly.

This has allowed me time to train with Kendrick and Balleret in the gym, hopefully giving them the edge when they get on the court. You need to be ready to perform at a high level when you are only hitting for 45 mins. Court time is scarce here. us_open

As you will see in the video, the gym is constantly busy these days..if you aren’t doing fitness, you ain’t going to win baby!

Day One at the US Open

Posted August 22, 2010 – 6:37 am in: Pegasus Internet Training Program

It honestly feels as though I haven’t left this place…last year I was here until the finals and this year I am here before Qualification has started. Needless to say, deja vu set in the minute I got off the bus. balloukendoride

Since last week was spent working very hard on and off the court, we are now in active recovery phase which means only tennis and small amounts of strength training is in order for these two boys.

Above is a small clip that I got yesterday..due to technical problems, I will only post this one for now…more to come shortly…but actually, here is one more BONUS clip of late night training….Pisani Style!

US Open Looms - Training Camp Concludes in Vestal, NY

Posted August 18, 2010 – 7:03 pm in: Pegasus Internet Training Program

For the past 10 days we have had the luxury of staying at my parents house in Upstate, NY. The $50,000 Challenger proved to be a great spring board in final preparations for the final Grand Slam of the year, US Open. ballourun

We have had an abundance of different forms of training in Vestal. I wanted to mix it up and have fun. Exercises and drills that would get the guys mentally and physically fit. We did some gym, track, tennis and cycling. Tomorrow we leave for New York City where we will concentrate on point play, some gym, and lots of rest.

The work is almost done, and Showtime is right around the corner! Stay tuned!!!

US Open Series - Here We Go!

Posted July 22, 2010 – 8:30 pm in: Pegasus Internet Training Program

Benjamin Balleret arrived in Amelia Island, FL, right after a Davis Cup victory in his home country of Monaco, and shorty after losing a first round qualifying match in Atlanta, GA.

usopenseriesThe plan was to have 4 solid days of training before heading to California for the LA Open which is the start of the US Open Series. Qualifications for the event start on Saturday, July 23rd. The courts in Los Angeles are brand new, and very gritty. balleret1 The training we did consisted of a lot of hitting on the court, movement training in the fields and sand, and a lot of time in the gym.

The heat of Amelia provided for very tough conditions that really got him to work hard. Benjamin grew up on the red clay of Monaco, so the hard courts will be a really fun transition for him. Hopefully my experience on the hard courts can add a new dimension to his game.

Staying Fit at 50

Posted July 16, 2010 – 7:38 am in: Pegasus Internet Training Program

Ok, well the title to my blog is a little misleading…just a little! I always tease my super star client, Hideko Hallman about being just shy of 50. It’s a running joke, but there is no doubt about it, every time she walks into my personal training studio, she looks fitter and younger than before! It just goes to show you that if you take care of your body, eat well, and exercise daily, you can stay young and vibrant.

Here are a couple exercises that we did during our workout the other night. We basically worked on a lot of agility, power, and strength. Hideko is an avid tennis player that enjoys moving well on the clay. She takes pride in running down ball, lobbing her opponents, and then making them suffer by throwing in the nasty drop shot. So mean to do in this heat, but because of this, she has a special place in my heart!

My First “P90X” Experience

Posted June 29, 2010 – 9:38 am in: Pegasus Internet Training Program

If you turn on your TV and are surfing away, there is a good chance that you will see an infomercial for the fitness DVD package, P90x. The 90 refers to 90 days of training to get the body that you want, and the “X” stands for “extreme” training. In order to get results, you have to push yourself into uncomfortable places, and Tony, the trainer in the DVD series is really good at doing this. tonyp90x

The DVD’s that I did were, “Chest and Back”, and “Ab Ripper X”. I believe both DVDs lasted around 1 hour and 45 minutes. Tony does a great job in warming the body up by moving dynamically in place, and stretching the body out in my many excellent poses and stretches. This is followed by a crushing series of pushups and pullups. He has many variations of each, and if you are looking to get strong in the upper body, this is a great start. aaronp90x

The “Chest and Back” were your basic Push and Pull exercises with a bunch of variations thrown at you. I am not sure how many pull ups and pushups that I did, but I bet it was around 60 to 75 of each. It was a good thing that I train a little bit each day because I couldn’t imagine trying to do this without some sort of base. For the average American, this would be very tough to do, and I can pretty much guarantee soreness the following days. pushupp90x
AB Ripper X was not for me. I have had lower back issues for many years and many of the exercises put pressure on the lower back and I was simply unable to do them. I am sure there are many ladies and men out there that could do them, but for pre-existing lower back conditions, I wouldn’t recommend it. Tony points out that by the end of the Ab DVD, you have done “359″ reps of Ab and Core work, but if you are to read, Dr. Stuart McGill’s, Lower Back Disorders, you will see that his research shows that compression and loading occurs in the lower back when it is engaged in exercises that the DVD shows.

So overall, I liked the DVD’s and I would buy them if I was looking for a fun and effective way to get in good shape. However, as I pointed it out, you need to get fit in a logical and progressive manner. For people who have preexisting conditions, they need to be careful. I could see how this could be a turn off for people that are not in shape. I am sore today, and like I said, I have a good base. But, hats off to Tony for really putting together an excellent product.

Lateral Step Up with Dr. Mark Frisk

Posted June 27, 2010 – 1:23 pm in: Amelia Island Personal Training, Pegasus Internet Training Program, Tennis Fitness

The lateral step up will increase your strength in your quads, hips, and hamstrings. By holding the dumbbell in the opposite hand of the working leg, you engage your core across your body, while working on one legged balance.

Here is top 10 in the nation, Dr. Mark Frisk of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL demonstrating this exercise. Mark has worked real hard in the gym and his results show it. A 6th place finish in The National Clay Court Championships, followed by a 5th place in The National Hard Court Championships has Mark in great position to make the Senior Worlds Team.

The Pauly P Lateral Shuffle with Jr. White Shadow

Posted June 19, 2010 – 5:14 pm in: Amelia Island Personal Training, Endurance Training

For the past few days I have had the opportunity to train Greg Labanowski from Houston, TX.

Here is a clip from the end of practice. The repetitive change of direction, and the bending of the knees to touch each target, will strengthen the legs and build endurance.

We did 8, 20 second intervals, with 10 seconds rest in between each one. Greg’s heart rate was very high at the end of this drill. Try this out at the end of your next training session…it will really make you sweat!

I just completed an 8 day training camp with junior John Woodard. John is heading to LSU this upcoming fall and will be competing on the Men’s Tennis team. John needed to train all facets of his conditioning in order to compete in the upcoming Summer tournament’s. abrollwoodard

Here is a brief interview from John as he completes his final ride of his fitness camp. Keep in mind that I traveled next to John in the wide open and very safe country roads. Be sure to wear a helmut and ride in safe terrain.
